ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Midfielder Brian Carroll scored all three of his goals in the second half as the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Chesapeake Bayhawks (1-0) opened their title defense by earning a 14-10 victory over the Rochester Rattlers (0-1) in front of 7,916 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.
After the teams traded goals twice in the opening six minutes of the first quarter, the Bayhawks took a 4-2 lead with back-to-back goals from midfielder Kyle Dixon and attackman Ben Rubeor.
But, the Rattlers tied the game at 4-4 by scoring twice in the opening five minutes of the second quarter on goals from attackman Ned Crotty and midfielder Martin Cahill. However, the Bayhawks responded with three straight goals to take a 7-4 lead with 5:02 left in the first half.
A pair of goals by attackman Ari Sussman narrowed the Rattlers' deficit to 7-6 with 8:41 left in the third quarter.
The teams traded goals before the Bayhawks upped their lead to 13-8 by scoring five of the next six goals, including three goals by Carroll.
Midfielder Matt Striebel ended the Bayhawks' run by scoring an unassisted goal with 4:50 remaining in the fourth quarter before the teams traded goals to end the scoring.
While Carroll earned Bud Light MVP honors with his three-goal performance, Rubeor added a "hat trick" with three goals. Midfielder Michael Kimmel added two goals with an assist as Chesapeake outshot Rochester by a 50-34 margin.
Crotty scored three goals with an assist in a losing effort for the Rattlers, who were playing their first game since moving to Rochester during the off-season.
The Bayhawks begin a four-game road trip on Thursday night when they travel to Hamilton for a 7:30 p.m. match-up against the Nationals. Meanwhile, the Rattlers open a four-game homestand next Saturday night against the Long Island Lizards.
