HAMILTON, Ontario - Led by four goals and two assists from midfielder Michael Kimmel, the defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks (2-0) jumped out to a 9-4 half-time lead and held off a late rally by the Hamilton Nationals (0-2) to earn a 14-10 victory at Robert Joyce Stadium on Thursday evening.
Kimmel, who was named as the Bud Light MVP, scored two goals in each half as the Bayhawks won their fourth straight regular season game, dating back to last season.
After Kimmel gave the Bayhawks a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the first quarter, the Nationals responded with goals by Jordan Hall and Garrett Billings for a 2-1 advantage with 9:41 left in the period.
But, the Bayhawks used a seven-goal run over a 12-minute span to take an 8-2 lead with 9:41 left in the second quarter. Attackmen Danny Glading and Dan Hardy each scored two goals with an assist during the spurt.
With 7:26 left in the second quarter, rookie Jeremy Boltus ended a nearly 17-minute scoring drought by scoring a power-play goal off a feed from midfielder Joe Walters to trim the deficit to 8-3.
The teams traded goals in the final four minutes to give Chesapeake a 9-4 lead at the intermission.
The Nationals opened the second half by scoring three straight goals, cutting their deficit to 9-7 with 9:42 left in the third quarter. But, the Bayhawks tallied three straight points, including a two-point goal by midfielder Kyle Dixon, to regain a five-point advantage with 4:14 left in the third quarter.
Kimmel gave the Bayhawks a 13-7 lead just over a minute into the fourth quarter when he scored his third goal of the game, an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Joe Marra.
With 9:35 left in the fourth quarter, defenseman Brodie Merrill scored a two-point goal off a feed from attackman John Grant, Jr. before Donny Moss added an unassisted marker to narrow the margin to 13-10.
However, Kimmel sealed the victory for the Bayhawks when he scored off a Glading feed with 1:36 left.
While Kimmel led the Bayhawks with his six-point performance, Glading added a three-goal, two-assist effort. Hardy scored twice with an assist for the Bayhawks, who outshot Hamilton by a 41-32 margin. Goalkeeper Chris Garrity made seven saves in the first half before being replaced by Brian Phipps, who posted six saves in the second half.
Billings had a three-goal performance in a losing effort for the Nationals while Boltus and Hall each scored twice. Goalkeeper Scott Rodgers made five saves in the first half before being lifted for Marra, who had nine saves.
The Bayhawks continue their four-game road trip on June 4 when they visit Boston. Meanwhile, the Nationals will visit Rochester on June 10 in the first of three meetings against the Rattlers.
