BOSTON, Mass. - Goalkeeper Jordan Burke made a career-high 24 saves, including 15 in the first half, to lead the Boston Cannons (3-1) to their third win in the last four games, a 19-8 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Long Island Lizards (1-3) in front of 8,148 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday evening.
Burke, who earned Bud Light Player of the Game honors, led a strong defensive effort as the Cannons held Long Island to a season-low seven goals, including just three in the second half.
The Cannons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first four minutes of the first quarter as attackman Matt Poskay scored a goal along wih a two-point goal from midfielder Brad Ross.
But, the Lizards answered back by scoring four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead with 1:59 remaining in the first quarter.
However, the Cannons put together a six-goal run over an 18-minute span to take a 9-4 lead with 12:36 left in the third quarter. Poskay scored twice during the run while Boyle and midfielder Paul Rabil each scored a goal with an assist.
With 11:24 left in the third quarter, midfielder Stephen Peyser ended the Lizards' drought by scoring an unassisted marker past Burke. However, the Cannons quickly answered with three goals in a four-minute span, upping their advantage to 12-5.
After the teams traded goals to end the third quarter, the Cannons exploded for six points, including a pair of two-point goals from Rabil and Ross, to put the game out of reach with a 19-6 lead. Attackman Matt Danowski provided the final goal of the game with 3:45 left for the Lizards with a two-point marker off a feed from attackman Tim Goettelmann.
While Burke led the Cannons defense with his 24-save effort, Ross paced the Boston offense with three goals, including a pair of two-point markers, and an assists. Poskay scored four goals for the Cannons, who outshot the Lizards by a 52-45 margin.
Peyser scored three goals in a losing effort for the Lizards while midfielder Peter Vlahakis won nine face-offs to break the MLL all-time face-off wins record. Vlahakis passed Paul Cantabene for first place on the list and now has 1,023 face-off wins in his career.
