HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Attackman Matt Danowski posted his second "hat trick" of the season by scoring three goals, including two in the second half, as the Long Island Lizards (2-3) rallied from a two-point half-time deficit to earn a 14-11 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks (3-2) at James M. Shuart Stadium on Thursday night.
Led by Danowski, the Lizards outscored the Bayhawks by an 8-3 margin after the intermission en route to their first home victory of the season.
The Lizards took a quick 1-0 lead just 63 seconds into the first quarter when midfielder Stephen Peyser scored an unassisted goal past goalkeeper Joey Kemp.
But, the Bayhawks answered by scoring the next five goals over an eight-minute span to take a commanding 5-1 lead with 4:27 left in the period. Attackman Danny Glading and midfielder Ben Hunt, the reigning MLL Offensive Player of the Week, each scored twice during the spurt.
With 1:45 remaining in the first quarter, Danowski scored a two-point goal off a feed from midfielder Stephen Berger to end the Bayhawks' run and trim the deficit to 5-3. With 38 seconds left, attackman John Grant, Jr. cut the margin to 5-4 with a goal off a feed from midfielder Mike Ward.
The teams traded goals twice to open the second quarter before Hunt tallied his third goal of the game off a pass from attackman Ben Rubeor, giving Chesapeake an 8-6 advantage at the intermission.
Just 49 seconds into the third quarter, defenseman Kyle Hartzell upped the Bayhawks' lead to 10-6 when he tallied a two-point goal past goalkeeper Drew Adams.
But, it was the Bayhawks' final goal for nearly 25 minutes as Long Island scored seven straight goals to take a 13-10 advantage with 10:34 left in the fourth quarter. Danowski scored two of his three goals during the run while Peyser added a goal with an assist.
Hunt ended the Chesapeake scoring drought with 4:23 left on a goal off an assist from midfielder Kyle Dixon, but the Lizards sealed the victory when Berger scored an unassisted goal with 3:15 remaining.
While Danowski led the Lizards with his four-point effort, Peyser, Grant and Berger each scored two goals with an assist. Adams made nine saves, including five in the fourth quarter, to earn Bud Light Player of the Game honors.
Hunt, who scored five goals against Denver last week, led the Bayhawks with four goals while Glading scored twice with an assist. Kemp made five saves in the first half before being replaced by Brian Phipps, who had six saves in the second half.
The Lizards outshot the Bayhawks by a 45-41 margin and won 16 of 26 face-offs.
