BOSTON, Mass. – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending June 19, 2011, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Attackman Brendan Mundorf of the Denver Outlaws earned his second MLL Offensive Player of the Week honor this season while rookie defenseman Brian Karalunas of the Long Island Lizards was named as the MLL Defensive Player of the Week.
In addition, Rochester Rattlers attackman Jordan McBride was honored as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week.
In leading the Outlaws to a convincing 15-7 victory over the Hamilton Nationals on Saturday night, Mundorf scored four goals and added four assists as Denver remained tied for first place in the MLL standings with a 4-1 record. Mundorf scored three of his four goals in the first half as Denver jumped out to a commanding 11-3 lead in the first half and never looked back.
The MLL’s leading scorer with 14 goals and 23 points, Mundorf has scored 10 goals with 8 assists in the Outlaws’ two wins over Hamilton this season. He had six goals with four assists in the Outlaws’ season-opening victory over the Nationals on May 14.
While helping the Long Island Lizards post a 14-11 victory over the defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks on Thursday night, Karalunas posted a season-high seven ground balls and was part of a Lizard defense that held midfielder Kyle Dixon without a goal for the second straight game. In addition, the Lizards limited Chesapeake to a season-low 11 points.
Selected in the sixth round of the MLL Collegiate Draft, the former Villanova University standout has played in four games this season and has tallied 14 ground balls, which ranks third on the team.
Making his Major League Lacrosse debut, McBride scored four goals with two assists in the Rattlers’ 16-14 loss against the Boston Cannons on Saturday night at Sahlen’s Stadium. He scored three of his goals in the first half as Rochester jumped out to an 8-6 lead at the intermission. He scored the first goal of his MLL career just 2:47 into the first quarter by converting a feed from midfielder Martin Cahill.
Selected in the third round of the MLL Collegiate Draft, McBride was the leading scorer at Stony Brook University as a senior with 41 goals and 7 assists. A four-time USILA All-America selection, McBride scored a school-record 175 goals in his career and was named as the America East Conference Player of the Year.
The MLL season continues this weekend with four games. On Friday night, the Rattlers will host Hamilton in the first game of a weekend home-and-home series, which concludes on Saturday night at Robert Joyce Stadium. In addition, the Bayhawks return home after a four-game road trip on Saturday to host Boston, which will be playing its second straight home game. In addition, the Outlaws entertain Long Island on Saturday night at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
