Ultimate MLL Fans Selected as Captains for Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game
Boston, Massachusetts – June 24, 2011 – Winners of the Ultimate MLL Fan Fantasy have been selected as captains for the 2011 Sports Authority Major League Lacrosse (MLL) All-Star Game to be held at Harvard Stadium in Boston, MA on July 9th.
14-year-old Nathan Solomon of Alpharetta, GA and 13-year-old Michael Hatala of Glen Cove, NY submitted winning entries judged by top MLL athletes.
“This is the first time in league history that we’ve hosted a contest that would truly put the fans in control of selecting the two All-Star teams,” said MLL Commissioner David Gross. “We are thrilled by the success of the contest. We received entries from all over the country, which is a testament to both the growth of the league and the sport itself. We look forward to welcoming Nathan and Michael to Boston where they’ll hand-pick their very own MLL All-Star Team and have the Ultimate MLL Fan Experience.”
Michael Hatala’s winning entry portrayed an image of a dedicated Long Island Lizards fan who found strength on the lacrosse field to overcome adversity after being bullied when he was younger.
“It means so much to be chosen,” Hatala said. “It will give me a chance to encourage lacrosse kids to feel better about themselves. I’m honored to represent Glen Cove Lacrosse!”
Nathan Solomon, who loves the Chesapeake Bayhawks, submitted an inspiring document explaining how he came to live for lacrosse after meeting MLL Legend Casey Powell.
The contest was judged by seven of the league’s best athletes including lacrosse sensation Paul Rabil of the Boston Cannons, Max Seibald of the Denver Outlaws, Drew Westervelt of the Denver Outlaws, Max Quinzani of the Boston Cannons, Martin Cahill of the Rochester Rattlers, Nicky Polanco of the Long Island Lizards, and Matt Poskay of the Boston Cannons.
“I chose Michael’s entry because I’m very against bullying," Long Island Lizards defenseman Nicky Polanco said. "I was bullied when I was young and found an escape through lacrosse. When I’m with my team I feel like I have an army behind me. I think it’s great that Michael wants to promote the feeling of confidence that comes with having teammates. Bullying is a serious issue today, which is why MLL players are proud to be ambassadors for the game and to leave lasting impressions on kids like Michael.”
The All-Star selection event will take place at Harvard Stadium in Boston, MA on Friday, July 8 as part of the All-Star Kick Off Party at 7:00 pm. The selection event is free and open to the public.
The 2011 Sports Authority MLL All-Star Game will be held at Harvard Stadium in Boston, Mass at 7:00 pm on Saturday, June 9. The annual event is one of MLL’s biggest events of the season and features the popular Bud Light Skills Competition and the all-new Goalie Gauntlet. Forty of the league’s best athletes will compete against each other in a single game. The MLL All-Star Game will air live on ESPN2. In addition to the All-Star Game, Harvard University will be the host for the Warrior 40, featuring the top high school players in the country and the Red Bull Baggataway tournament.
