ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Rookie attackman Jeremy Boltus tied a Hamilton team record by scoring seven goals, including three goals in the third quarter, as the Nationals (2-3) overcame a three-point deficit to earn a 19-16 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Rochester Rattlers (0-5) at Sahlen's Stadium on Friday evening.
Boltus, who earned Bud Light Player of the Game honors, matched the Nationals' single-game record of seven goals, which was set by attackman Merrick Thomson against the Washington Bayhawks on May 15, 2009 in a 17-16 victory.
After Boltus gave the Nationals a quick 1-0 lead, the Rattlers scored four straight goals to take a 4-1 advantage with 5:26 left in the first quarter. Attackman Ned Crotty led the Rattlers during the spurt with a goal and an assist.
The teams exchanged goals twice before Boltus and midfielder Brett Bucktooth ended the first quarter by scoring back-to-back goals in a 52-second span, trimming the Rattlers' lead to 6-5.
But, the Ratters responded with another four-goal run, including two goals from midfielder Martin Cahill and rookie attackman Grant Catalino, to extend their advantage to 10-5 with 6:19 left in the first half.
Led by two goals from Boltus, the Nationals cut the deficit to 11-8 by scoring three of the last four goals to end the first half.
Crotty and Catalino upped the Rattlers' cushion to 13-8 with 11:18 left by scoring consecutive goals. But, the Nationals answered by scoring nine straight goals, including three markers from Boltus, to take a convincing 17-13 lead with 2:42 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Trailing by four points, the Rattlers tried to mount a comeback. With 2:16 left, Catalino scored off a feed from midfielder Greg Niewieroski to close the gap to 17-14. After midfielder Joe Walters scored on a two-point goal off an assist from midfielder Jordan Hall extended the Nationals' advantage to 19-14, Catalino tallied his ninth goal of the game, a two-point marker off a feed from Cahill with 1:18 left.
However, the Rattlers were unable to get any closer.
While Boltus led the Nationals with seven goals, Walters added three goals, including a two-point marker, with three assists. Hall contributed three goals with two assists as the Nationals earned their second win over Rochester this season.
Catalino tied the MLL single-game record with nine goals, including a two-point marker, while Crotty contributed two goals and two assists. Rookie goalkeeper John Galloway made 18 saves, including six in the first quarter, as the Rattlers were outshot by a 50-36 margin.
