HAMILTON, Ontario, Canada - Midfielder Brett Bucktooth scored the game-winning goal with 2:19 remaining in overtime as the Hamilton Nationals (3-3) completed a sweep of their home-and-home series against the Rochester Rattlers (0-6) with a 15-14 overtime victory at Robert Joyce Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Nationals, who swept the season series against the Rattlers, earned their second win over Rochester in as many nights. Hamilton posted a 19-16 victory over the Rattlers at Sahlen's Stadium on Friday night.
Midfielders David Earl and Jordan Hall scored back-to-back goals in the opening four minutes to give Hamilton an early 2-0 lead. After the teams traded goals, however, the Rattlers responded by scored three consecutive goals to take a 4-3 advantage with 4:41 left in the opening stanza.
Led by two goals from attackman Cody Jamieson, the Nationals put together a three-goal spurt of their own to regain the advantage at 6-4 just over a minute into the second quarter. The teams traded goals twice before Earl tallied his third goal of the game, an unassisted marker with 51 seconds remaining in the second quarter that gave Hamilton a 9-6 lead at the intermission.
The Nationals continued their run to open the third quarter, scoring five straight goals to take a commanding 14-6 lead with 5:11 left in the period. Midfielder Joe Walters had two goals with two assists during the spurt.
After allowing eight consecutive goals, the Rattlers put together an eight-point run of their own to tie the game at 14-14 with 53 seconds left in regulation. After midfielders Jeff Colburn and Jordan Levine ended the third quarter with back-to-back goals, Colburn opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted marker with just over 11 minutes left in regulation.
A pair of goals from rookie attackman Jordan McBride closed the gap to 14-11 before midfielder Matt Striebel fired home a two-point goal off a Levine assist, trimming the margin to 14-13.
With 53 seconds remaining, attackman Ned Crotty found Colburn, who scored his third goal of the game past goalkeeper Scott Rodgers, to tie the game and force the extra session.
But, the Nationals responded when Bucktooth took a pass from defenseman Brodie Merrill and scored his second goal of the game to secure the victory.
While Earl led the Nationals with four goals, Walters contributed two goals with a season-high six assists. Meanwhile, Rodgers was named as the Bud Light Player of the Game after making 17 saves, including three in the overtime period.
Colburn led Rochester with three goals and two assists while Crotty posted a goal with four assists. Midfielder Anthony Kelly won 19 of 31 face-offs and recorded 13 ground balls.
The Rattlers outshot Hamilton by a 50-38 margin and had a 36-29 advantage in ground balls.
