DENVER, Colo. - Attackman Connor Martin scored a career-high five goals to lead the Denver Outlaws (5-1) to their second straight win, an 18-11 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Long Island Lizards (2-4) in front of 10,142 fans at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Outlaws remained in a tie for first place in the MLL standings with the Boston Cannons, who earned their fourth straight win with a 17-10 verdict over Chesapeake on Saturday.
The Outlaws took an early 2-0 lead just six minutes into the first quarter with back-to-back goals from midfielder Jarrett Park and attackman Brendan Mundorf.
Midfielder Stephen Berger trimmed the margin to 2-1 when he scored an unassisted goal with 5:23 left in the opening stanza. But, the Outlaws answered by scoring eight straight goals, including a pair of markers from Mundorf and Martin, to take a commanding 10-1 advantage with 7:13 left in the first half.
But, the Lizards put together a run of their own, scoring five straight points to trim the deficit to 10-6 at the intermission.
Holding a four-point lead, the Outlaws came out of the locker room and put together two quick goals from Martin and attackman Drew Westervelt to expand their cushion to 12-6 with 12:44 left in the third quarter.
The teams traded goals twice before attackman Max Seibald fired home a two-point goal off an assist from Westervelt, giving Denver a 16-8 lead with 1:48 left in the third quarter. But, attackman Matt Danowski countered with his second two-point goal of the game in the closing seconds of the period for a 16-10 margin.
Just over two minutes into the fourth quarter, rookie Zach Brenneman scored an unassisted goal for the Lizards, narrowing the gap to 16-11. But, the Outlaws sealed the victory with goals from Martin and midfielder Bill McGlone in a three-minute span.
While Martin earned Bud Light Player of the Game honors with his five-goal performance, Mundorf contributed four goals with two assists. The leading scorer in the MLL, Mundorf now has 18 goals with 11 assists.
Berger paced the Lizards with three goals while Danowski contributed his pair of two-point goals.
The Outlaws outshot Long Island by a 46-32 margin and win 24 of 30 face-offs.
