Boltus, Sweeney, Catalino Earn Week 6 Awards

BOSTON, Mass. –  Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending June 26, 2011, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Hamilton Nationals rookie attackman Jeremy Boltus was honored as the League’s Offensive Player of the Week while Boston Cannons defenseman Kyle Sweeney earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor.

In addition, Rochester Rattlers attackman Grant Catalino was named as the recipient of the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week award.

While leading the Nationals to a weekend sweep of the Rattlers, Boltus scored nine goals in their two games. In the Nationals’ 19-16 victory over Rochester on Friday night, he tied a Hamilton single-game record by scoring seven goals, including four goals in the first half. He added a pair of goals in the Nationals’ 15-14 overtime victory on Saturday night, marking Hamilton’s third win over Rochester this season.

Boltus, who earned Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week honors on May 23, leads all MLL rookies with 11 goals and 16 points. The 2011 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, Boltus finished his college career ranked second in Army men’s lacrosse history with 124 career assists and 214 points. A Tewaaraton Award finalist, he scored 24 goals with 45 assists as a senior.

Meanwhile, Sweeney led the Cannons to their fourth straight win, a 17-10 victory over the defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks on Saturday night. He scored a goal with an assist and held Chesapeake attackman Danny Glading to just one assist. With 34 seconds left in the second quarter, he trimmed the Cannons’ deficit to 7-6 with an unassisted goal. He also had an assist in the second half as the Cannons outscored the Bayhawks by 11-3 after the intermission.

While helping the Cannons to a 5-1 record, Sweeney has scored one goal with two assists in five games. He has also contributed 12 ground balls.

In just his second career game, Catalino had a record-setting performance in the Rattlers’ 19-16 loss against Hamilton on Friday night. Catalino tied the MLL single-game record by scoring nine goals, including a two-point marker, and became the first player in five years to score nine goals in a game. He scored six of his goals in the first half as the Rattlers built an 11-8 lead.

The former University of Maryland standout was drafted by the Denver Outlaws in the fourth round of the MLL Collegiate Draft, but was acquired by the Rattlers in a trade. He ranks seventh in Maryland men’s lacrosse history with 119 goals and helped the Terrapins reach the NCAA Championship Game for the first time since 1998.

The MLL season continues this week with three exciting games. On Friday night, Boltus and the Nationals will host Long Island at Ron Joyce Stadium. The Rattlers will travel to Chesapeake on Saturday night while the Outlaws and the Cannons square off on Sunday night in a battle for first place in the MLL standings.
