ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Goalkeeper Brian Phipps made a season-high 21 saves, including 11 in the second half, to lead the defending MLL champion Chesapeake Bayhawks (4-3) to a 13-11 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Rochester Rattlers (0-7) in front of 8,410 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening.
The win snapped the Bayhawks' two-game losing streak and moved them into a tie for third place in the MLL standings with Hamilton, which defeated Long Island by a 15-9 margin on Friday evening.
After the teams traded goals in the opening five minutes of the game, the Bayhawks put together a four-point run, including a two-point goal by midfielder Steven Brooks, to take a 5-1 lead with 5:05 left in the opening period.
But, the Rattlers used goals from rookies Jovan Miller and Jordan McBride to trim the deficit to 5-3 at the end of the first quarter.
Led by a goal and an assist from attackman Danny Glading, the Bayhawks scored the first three goals of the second quarter to extend their advantage to 8-3 with 11:29 left in the first half. However, the Rattlers responded with back-to-back goals from midfielders Jordan Levine and Brett Garber to trim the deficit to 8-5 with 9:09 left.
With four seconds left, attackman Ben Rubeor scored off a feed from midfielder Matt Abbott to give Chesapeake a four-point lead at the intermission.
After the teams exchanged goals twice to begin the second half, the Bayhawks took a 12-7 lead on a goal from midfielder Dan Hardy. But, Garber answered with 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter, narrowing the Rochester deficit to 12-8.
The Bayhawks upped their lead to 13-8 just over three minutes into the fourth quarter when midfielder Justin Smith scored an unassisted marker past rookie goalkeeper John Galloway.
Trailing by five points, the Rattlers scored three straight times to trim the margin to 13-11. After McBride scored with 10:28 left, Miller scored two straight goals in a six-minute span, cutting the margin to two. But, the Rattlers were unable to get any closer.
While Phipps led the Bayhawks with his 21-save performance, Rubeor contributed two goals with two assists. Hardy scored a season-high three goals for the third "hat trick" of his MLL career while Brooks scored twice, including a two-point goal, with an assist.
Miller led Rochester in a losing effort by scoring the first three goals of his MLL career while McBride tallied his third "hat trick" of the season with three goals. Galloway made 15 saves for the Rattlers, who were outshot by a 47-44 margin.
The loss spoiled the MLL debut for Rochester Coach Tim Soudan, who replaced B.J. O'Hara earlier this week.
