Rabil, Phipps, Crowley Honored by MLL

BOSTON, Mass. – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending July 3, 2011, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil was named as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week while Chesapeake Bayhawks goalkeeper Brian Phipps earned the League’s Defensive Player of the Week award.

In addition, rookie midfielder Kevin Crowley of the Hamilton Nationals was selected as the recipient of the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week award.

Rabil scored three goals, including a two-point marker, and added three assists to lead the Cannons to their fifth straight win, a 15-12 victory over the Denver Outlaws on Sunday night at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Rabil, who was named as the Bud Light Player of the Game, scored two of his goals in the second half as the Cannons overcame a 7-3 half-time deficit to take sole possession of first place in the MLL standings.

The MLL’s leading scorer with 33 points, Rabil is also tied for the league lead with 18 goals and is tied for second in the MLL with 13 assists. He has tallied 18 points in the last three games, recording at least five points in each outing.

Rabil earned the Offensive Player of the Week award for the second time this year. He received the honor on June 6 after leading the Cannons to a victory over the Bayhawks at Harvard Stadium.

While leading the Bayhawks to a 13-11 victory over Rochester on Saturday night, Phipps made a season-high 21 saves, including 11 in the second half, as Chesapeake snapped a two-game losing streak. Honored as the Bud Light Player of the Game, he made six saves in the first quarter and had six more saves in the fourth quarter.

Phipps, who has started the last two games for the Bayhawks, ranks third in the MLL with a .559 save percentage while allowing 14.00 goals per game.  It is the first time Phipps has been honored with a weekly award in his career.

Crowley earned the Cascade Rookie of the Week honor after scoring four goals with two assists in the Nationals’ 15-9 victory over Long Island on Friday night. While leading the Nationals to their third win in a row, Crowley tallied three of his goals in the first half as Hamilton jumped out to a 7-4 lead at the intermission.

The first overall pick in the 2011 MLL Collegiate Draft, Crowley has scored six goals with four assists in five games this year. A first team USILA All-American as a senior, he finished his collegiate career at Stony Brook as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 232 points. He scored 30 goals with 26 assists as a senior and was named as the USILA Division I Midfielder of the Year.

The MLL season continues on Saturday night with the Sports Authority MLL All-Star Game at Harvard Stadium. The game will take place at 7 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN2 and available online on ESPN3.com.
