ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Led by 16 saves from goalkeeper Drew Adams, the Long Island Lizards (4-5) outscored the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Chesapeake Bayhawks (5-4) by a 9-2 margin in the second half to earn their second straight win, a 15-8 MLL victory in front of 7,793 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.
The reigning MLL Defensive Player of the Week, Adams made 10 of his 16 saves in the second half en route to earning Bud Light Player of the Game honors for the second straight game.
After the teams traded goals to open the first quarter, the Bayhawks scored four straight goals, including a pair of markers from attackman Danny Glading, to take a 5-1 lead with 7:37 remaining in the opening stanza.
But, the Lizards scored back-to-back goals from midfielders Stephen Peyser and Ryan Young to narrow the margin to 5-3 with 15 seconds left in the first quarter.
Midfielder Dan Hardy scored a power-play goal off a feed from Glading less than two minutes into the second quarter to give Chesapeake a 6-3 lead. But, it was the Bayhawks' last goal of the first half as Long Island scored three straight goals, including a pair from midfielder Stephen Berger, to tie the game at 6-6 at the intermission.
With 12:26 left in the third quarter, midfielder Ben Hunt scored to regain the Bayhawks' lead at 7-6. However, the Lizards' defense held Chesapeake scoreless for nearly 27 minutes while scoring eight straight goals for a 15-7 lead they did not relinquish. Peyser and attackman John Grant, Jr. each scored twice during the run.
Attackman Ben Rubeor ended the Bayhawks' drought with 41 seconds left by scoring off a feed from Glading.
While Adams led the Long Island defense, Berger, Peyser and attackman Tim Goettelmann each scored three goals for the Lizards, who were outshot by a 46-38 margin.
Glading led the Bayhawks in a losing effort by scoring two goals with three assists while Hunt and Rubeor each added a pair of goals. Making his third straight start, goalkeeper Brian Phipps made 12 saves for the Bayhawks, who were held to a season-low eight goals.
