MLL and NB Foundation Raise $25,000 for JDRF to Support Type 1 Diabetes Research
(Boston, MA) July 29, 2011 –Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and the New Balance Foundation teamed up following the 2011 MLL All-Star Game to raise $25,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the worldwide leader in research to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes. JDRF was named the official charity of the MLL All-Star Game this year and the jerseys were designed with its corporate elements in mind.
“We were thrilled to support such a worthy charitable organization and thoroughly enjoyed partnering with JDRF at the All-Star Game in Boston this year,” said MLL Commissioner David Gross. “We are proud of the money MLL raised through our auction and are grateful that the New Balance Foundation matched the dollar amount to contribute to research that could potentially aid in the development of better treatments and a cure for type 1 diabetes.”
The MLL All-Star players signed their official game-worn jerseys which were auctioned through MLL, allowing fans to bid on their favorite players. The net proceeds from the auction raised $12,500, all of which will be donated to JDRF. A matching donation was made by The New Balance Foundation, doubling the proceeds to a total of $25,000 raised for JDRF to fund research to help find better treatments through improved glucose control and find a cure for type 1 diabetes.
“On behalf of JDRF, we are honored to have been the official charity for this year’s MLL All Star Game,” said Yvonne Miller, JDRF’s Director of Corporate Development. “The generosity of MLL and the New Balance Foundation, and the enthusiasm of MLL fans have been inspirational and we are truly grateful for all of their support.”
“The New Balance Foundation is pleased to match the $12,500 raised through the 2011 MLL All-Star Charity Auction,” said Molly Santry, Charitable Programs Manager for New Balance. “Through the generosity of MLL fans, MLL, and NB, we’re able to honor JDRF with a donation totaling $25,000. New Balance believes in the mission of JDRF and shares a commitment to accelerating research to help cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. ”
A check will be presented to JDRF during an on-field presentation during the 2011 MLL Championship game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD on Sunday August 28th.
JDRF is the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide.
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump – each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its potential complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.
Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research, including $107 million last year. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. For more information, please visit www.jdrf.org.
