DENVER, Colo. - Midfielder Kevin Buchanan scored the game-winning goal with 1:06 remaining in the fourth quarter as the Boston Cannons (7-3) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 10-9 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Denver Outlaws (5-5) in front of 7,804 fans at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Saturday evening.

With the win, the Cannons become the first team to secure a berth in the Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend, which will take place August 27-28 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Meanwhile, the Outlaws move into a tie for third place in the MLL standings with Chesapeake and Long Island.

After the teams traded goals in the first quarter, the Cannons took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter on a goal by attackman Matt Poskay. But, the Outlaws answered with back-to-back goals from attackmen Drew Westervelt and Brendan Mundorf to take a 3-2 advantage into the intermission.

Midfielders Paul Rabil and Pat Heim scored a pair of unassisted goals in the opening three minutes of the third quarter to regain the Cannons' one-point lead at 3-2. However, the Outlaws responded by scoring three straight goals over a four-minute span to take a 5-3 lead with 7:19 left in the period.

The teams exchanged goals in a 60-second span before defenseman Kyle Sweeney scored a shorthanded goal with 52 seconds left in the third quarter to trim the Cannons' deficit to 7-6.

Westervelt scored his third goal of the game just 1:14 into the fourth quarter to give the Outlaws an 8-6 cushion, but midfielder Brad Ross erased the deficit by scoring a two-point goal off a feed from attackman Ryan Boyle with 6:32 left in regulation.

With 3:59 remaining, Mundord tallied his third goal of the game with an unassisted marker past goalkeeper Jordan Burke to give Denver a 9-8 advantage. But, the Cannons scored twice in the final two minutes to take a 10-9 lead they did not relinquish. With 1:54 left, attackman Max Quinzani evened the score at 9-9 by scoring off a Poskay assist.

Just 48 seconds later, Buchanan gave the Cannons a one-point advantage when he scored off an assist from Heim for his 13th goal of the season.

Buchanan was named as the Bud Light Player of the Game after leading the Cannons to their second win over the Outlaws this season. Meanwhile, Poskay scored two goals with an assist while Heim contributed a goal with two assists.

Burke, who entered the game as the MLL leader in save percentage, made 17 saves, including eight saves in the fourth quarter.

Mundorf and Westervelt each scored three goals to lead the Outlaws in a losing effort while rookie attackman Billy Bitter and attackman Terry Kimener each added a goal with an assist. Goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman, who entered the game as the MLL leader in goals against average, made 17 saves while allowing nine goals.

The Outlaws outshot Boston by a 50-43 margin and had a slim 23-22 advantage in ground balls.
