ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Defenseman Kyle Hartzell scored two goals, including a two-point marker, as the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Chesapeake Bayhawks (6-5) earned a berth in the 2011 Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend with a 13-11 victory over the Rochester Rattlers (2-9) at Sahlen's Stadium on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Bayhawks secured their second straight postseason appearance and the seventh playoff berth in franchise history.
After midfielder Ben Hunt gave the Bayhawks a 1-0 lead in the first four minutes of the opening quarter, the Rattlers used back-to-back goals from midfielder Greg Niewieroski and rookie attackman Grant Catalino to take a 2-1 advantage with 8:58 left in the period.
The teams traded goals twice before the Bayhawks used a six-point run to take a 9-4 lead with 1:18 left in the first half. Hartzell and midfielder Kyle Dixon each scored a two-point goal during the spurt as the Rattlers were held scoreless for nearly nine minutes.
With 11 seconds left in the first half, attackman Ned Crotty scored an unassisted goal to end the Rattlers' scoring drought and trim the deficit to 9-5 at the intermission.
Midfielder Matt Abbott extended the Bayhawks' advantage to 10-5 with an unassisted marker before the Rattlers scored three of the next four goals, including a pair of goals from midfielder Jeff Colburn, to narrow the deficit to 11-8 with 33 seconds left in the third quarter.
The teams exchanged goals twice before Crotty scored with 1:19 left in regulation, but the Rattlers were unable to get any closer.
While Hartzell scored twice to earn Bud Light Player of the Game honors, Hunt added two goals with an assist. Dixon contributed a two-point goal with two assists as the Bayhawks earned their first win since a 12-11 overtime victory at Hamilton on July 16.
Crotty scored four goals to lead the Rattlers in a losing effort while Colburn contributed two goals with three assists.
The Rattlers outshot Chesapeake by a 46-34 margin while the Bayhawks held a 32-25 advantage in ground balls.
