BOSTON, Mass. – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending August 14, 2011, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Denver Outlaws attackman Brendan Mundorf was selected as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season while Boston Cannons midfielder Chris Eck earned the MLL Defensive Player of the Week honor.
In addition, Hamilton Nationals midfielder David Earl was named as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week.
Mundorf scored five goals and added three assists as the Outlaws secured the second seed for the Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior with a 15-9 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks on Saturday night. Mundorf scored four of his five goals in the first half as the Outlaws jumped out to a 12-1 lead at the intermission, which included an 11-goal run.
Mundorf, who was named as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time in his career, finished the season tied for the MLL lead with 30 goals and ranked third in the league with 45 points. It marked his fourth 30-goal season in the last five years.
In leading the Cannons to a 16-15 overtime victory over the Rochester Rattlers on Saturday night, Eck won 24 of 33 face-offs and had a season-high 13 ground balls. It marked the second time this season that Eck has won 20 or more face-offs after he won 27 of 29 face-offs against Denver on May 21 in a 13-12 loss.
Eck, who was named as the MLL Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, ended the season ranked second in the MLL with 156 face-off wins while his .595 face-off percentage led the league.
While earning the first Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week award of his career, Earl scored three goals and added an assist as the Nationals earned the third seed for MLL Championship Weekend with a 14-8 victory over the Long Island Lizards on Saturday night. It marked his third “hat trick” of the season while matching a season high with his four-point performance.
Earl, who played in 10 games during the regular season, was the Nationals’ fourth-leading scorer with 22 points. He scored 17 goals, including a two-point marker, and contributed four assists for Hamilton, which ended the regular season with three wins in its last four games.
The 2011 Sports Authority MLL Championship Weekend will take place on August 27 and 28 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The top-seeded Cannons will face the defending MLL champion Bayhawks in the first semi-final at 12 p.m. on Saturday while Hamilton and Denver play in the second semi-final at 3 p.m.
The semi-final winners will play for the MLL title on Sunday, August 28 at 3 p.m.
