Rochester Rattlers Contact
(Boston, MA) October 4, 2011 – Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced Tuesday a trade between the Rochester Rattlers and the Ohio Machine for the 2012 MLL season. Four players and a draft pick are to be traded from Rochester to Ohio, in return for two draft picks in the MLL Expansion Draft and two draft picks in the MLL Collegiate Draft. This trade marks the first player moves for the Machine’s inaugural 2012 season.
Through the trade, the Ohio Machine will acquire three Ohio State University (OSU) alumni, Greg Bice, Anthony Kelly and Stefan Schroder. Ohio has also acquired MLL veteran Brett Garber, son of Ohio Head Coach Ted Garber. The Machine will receive the Rattlers’ second round (15th overall) MLL Collegiate Draft pick.
In exchange, Rochester has obtained four new draft picks for the 2012 season. For the MLL Expansion Draft, Rochester has gained the first round (1st overall) and the 13th round (25th overall) draft picks. For the MLL Collegiate Draft, Rochester has gained the second round (10th overall) and the third round (18th overall) draft picks. Rochester now has a total of ten picks in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft. Five of the ten picks will be in the first three rounds of the draft.
“This deal really works well for both teams. We’re sending Greg, Anthony, Stefan and Brett home to play in Columbus. We’re receiving draft picks that we are looking to use in a couple of different ways,” said Rob Clark, Owner and General Manager of the Rochester Rattlers. “Not only can we build on the great base of young talent that we have here in Rochester, but now we can also use these picks to go out and acquire veteran players to fill some of our immediate needs.”
Rochester now has nineteen players on its protected roster, which will be narrowed down next Wednesday in the 10 to 12 Man Protected List.
“Greg and Anthony are two veteran All-Stars and outstanding players. Brett has proven to be a consistent scorer in MLL and Stefan is one of the up and coming young goalies in the League,” said Machine Head Coach Ted Garber. “With this core group of talented players, we are off to a great start to putting our team together for next season.”
Greg Bice was named the 2011 New Balance Sportsmen of the Year and was named the Rattlers 2011 Defender of the Year after playing in 11 of Rochester’s 12 games. Bice is also a three-time MLL All-Star.
Face-off specialist, Anthony Kelly has played in the MLL for six years and is a three-time MLL All-Star player. Kelly is currently fifth all time in the MLL for career faceoff wins, with 881.
Goalie Stefan Schroder played his first year in the MLL for Rochester in 2011 after being drafted in the 2011 MLL Supplemental Draft. Schroder played for the Buckeyes for two years after transferring from Onondaga Community College. Schroder finished the 2007 OSU season ranked in the top 20 nationally for goals against average and save percentage.
Brett Garber joins the Machine after five years in MLL. In 2011, Garber recorded five goals and four assists in 10 games.
“We’re very pleased that we were able to make this trade with Rochester,” said Machine President and GM John Algie. “These four players will be the nucleus of our team and we look forward to seeing them on the field for our inaugural season.”
Both the Machine and the Rattlers will have the opportunity to acquire additional players during the MLL Expansion Draft on December 7, the MLL Supplemental Draft on December 14 and the MLL Collegiate Draft on January 13.
