BAYHAWKS TRADE KYLE HARTZELL TO MACHINE FOR EXPANSION DRAFT PICK
BOSTON, MA (October 12, 2011)– Major League Lacrosse (MLL), announced today a trade between the Chesapeake Bayhawks and Ohio Machine, just hours before the 10 to 12-man protected lists will be released. The 2010 MLL Champion Bayhawks have traded defenseman Kyle Hartzell to the Ohio Machine, which will begin its inaugural season in 2012. In exchange, the Bayhawks will receive the Machine's 7th round selection (13th overall) in the 2012 MLL Expansion Draft. In addition to Hartzell, the Bayhawks have also given up their 2nd round selection (13th overall) in the 2012 MLL Supplemental Draft.
"Kyle has been a valuable member of the Bayhawks franchise and we thank him for his contributions," said Bayhawks General Manager Brian Reese. "We felt that this trade was a way to get a pick in the Expansion Draft to get a player that could help us. We felt that Kyle would have been selected in the Expansion draft and this was a way to get something of value in return."
Four year MLL defensive player Hartzell joined the Bayhawks in 2010, playing in more than 20 games, including the 2010 MLL Championship game where he was named the MVP. Prior to the Bayhawks, Hartzell played for Washington in 2009 and San Francisco in 2008.
“Anytime you have the opportunity to trade for a MLL Championship Weekend MVP, you have to make that move,” said President and GM John Algie. “Kyle will inject an incredible amount of athleticism and versatility into the Machine defense.”
Hartzell was drafted by San Francisco after a standout college tenure at Salisbury State University (SSU) where he won two NCAA Division III National Championships, was selected First Team and Third Team All-American and All-League and named SSU 2007 Most Valuable Defenseman. Hartzell also played at Community College Baltimore County – Essex where he won two NJCAA National Championships during his 2004 and 2005 seasons.
