Key Players Renew Contracts for 2012 MLL Season

BOSTON, Mass. (Monday, February 27, 2012) – Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday that several key players have renewed their contracts for the 2012 season, including Charlotte Hounds attackman Billy Bitter, Long Island Lizards goaltender Drew Adams, Ohio Machine face-off specialist Anthony Kelly, Long Island Lizards midfielder Stephen Peyser, Hamilton Nationals goaltender Scott Rodgers, Chesapeake Bayhawks attackman Ben Rubeor, Chesapeake Bayhawks defenseman Brian Spallina, and Hamilton Nationals midfielder Jeremy Thompson.

Charlotte Hounds attackman Billy Bitter has renewed his contract for the 2012 MLL season. The North Carolina alumnus was a first round (3rd overall) selection by the Denver Outlaws in the 2011 MLL Collegiate Draft. Bitter is entering his first season with the expansion Hounds, his second season with the league. In his rookie campaign, Bitter played in nine games for the Outlaws, tallying 16 points (12 goals, 4 assists), and picking up 18 ground balls. Bitter helped lead the Outlaws to the 2011 MLL Championship Weekend and scored three goals and one assist in the first semi-final game against the Hamilton Nationals.

Long Island Lizards goaltender Drew Adams has renewed his contract for the 2012 MLL season. The Penn State alumnus was a third round selection (19th overall) in the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft by the Lizards. He is entering his fourth season with the team. Last season, Adams was named the 2011 Warrior MLL Goalie of the Year after he ranked fourth in the league with an 11.75 goals against average. He also ranked third in the league with a .561 save percentage while leading the league in minutes played (704:44). In three MLL seasons, Adams has recorded a .543 save percentage while allowing 11.60 goals per game. He has made 325 saves in 25 career games, a 13.0 average. Adams was named to his first MLL All-Star team last season.

Ohio Machine face-off specialist Anthony Kelly has renewed his contract. The Ohio State alumnus joined the league in 2006, playing in eleven games for the Los Angeles Riptide. Kelly is entering his first season with the expansion Machine, his seventh season with the league. Last season, Kelly played in 11 games for the Rochester Rattlers and won 128 of 285 face-offs. He also picked up 41 ground balls and scored three goals (one two-pointer) and an assist, totaling five points. Kelly is a three-time MLL All-Star.

Long Island Lizards midfielder Stephen Peyser has also renewed his contract. The Johns Hopkins alumnus was a first round selection (4th overall) by the Chicago Machine in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft and is entering his fourth season with the Lizards, his fifth season with the league. After scoring just 14 goals in 11 games in 2010, Peyser exploded for 22 goals in 2011 and was the Lizards’ second-leading scorer with 32 points, which earned him the 2011 MLL Most Improved Player of the Year title. In addition, he ranked second on the team with six two-point goals after not scoring a two-point goal in his career prior to this season. Peyser also recorded four “hat tricks” in 2011. The midfielder has scored 72 career goals in 44 games, including six two-point goals, with 11 assists.  He is a two-time MLL All-Star.

Hamilton Nationals goaltender Scott Rodgers has renewed his contract with the league for the 2012 season. The Notre Dame alumnus was a second round selection (7th overall) by the Nationals in the 2010 MLL Collegiate Draft. He is entering his third season with the team. Last season, Rodgers played in nine games for the Nationals and ranked third in the league with an 11.46 goals against average. He also ranked fourth in the league with a .558 save percentage and recorded 106 saves. Rodgers has recorded a career. 563 save percentage and has made 182 career saves in 17 games with the Nationals.

Chesapeake Bayhawks attackman Ben Rubeor has renewed his contract for this season. The Virginia alumnus was a second round selection (14th overall) by the Long Island Lizards in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft. He is entering his fourth season with the Bayhawks, his fifth season with the league. Last season, Rubeor played in all 12 games for the Bayhawks and finished second on the team with 27 points (17 goals, 10 assists). He also picked up 28 ground balls. Rubeor has tallied 77 points in 39 career games (51 goals, 26 assists).

Chesapeake Bayhawks defenseman Brian Spallina has also renewed his contract for the 2012 season. The Hofstra University alumnus joined the league in its inaugural year and has become a defensive legend over the years. Spallina has played for the Long Island Lizards and the Philadelphia Barrage. This will mark his first season with the Bayhawks, his eleventh season with the league. Last season, Spallina played in all 12 regular season games with the Lizards and picked up eight ground balls. Throughout his MLL career, he has played in 107 career games and has seen the MLL playoffs six times (four times with the Barrage and twice with the Lizards). He is also an MLL All-Star (2006).

Hamilton Nationals midfielder Jeremy Thompson has renewed his contract for this season. The Syracuse alumnus was a first round selection (6th overall) by the Nationals in the 2011 MLL Collegiate Draft. He is entering his second season with the team. The midfielder earned Cascade Rookie of the Week honors on June 12, 2011 after scoring two goals to give the Nationals their first win of the season. He appeared in seven games for the Nationals during his MLL debut and tallied 10 points (6 goals, 4 assists).
