Cannons Gun Down Outlaws in Home Opener

(Boston starts off season strong behind four goals from Matt Poskay)

BOSTON, MA - Saturday,May 15, 2010 – The Boston Cannons opened their 2010 campaign by beating the Denver Outlaws 16-13 in front of 9,841 fans Saturday evening at Harvard Stadium. Midfielder Matt Poskay won Bud Light MVP player of the game honors as he ignited the Cannons offense with four goals, four groundballs and one assist.

Boston scored just fifteen seconds into the 2010 season on Kyle Sweeney’s unassisted goal to take an early 1-0 lead. Pat Heim, in his first game with Boston, added the second Cannons goal to extend the lead to 2-0. The Outlaws retaliated with consecutive goals by Brendan Loftus and Max Seibald to knot the score at 2. The two teams traded goals before Poskay scored a lunging goal with an assist from behind the net by Ryan Boyle to give the Cannons a 4-3 lead. Seibald answered again by rifling a two point goal to give the Outlaws a 5-4 lead after the first quarter.

Poskay stayed hot in the second, as he tied the score 5-5 when he put back a rebound off of Denver goaltender Jesse Schwartzman. Seibald put Denver back on top 6-5 as he slashed through two Boston defenders to score his third goal of the contest. The Cannons responded with four unanswered goals by Justin Smith, Poskay, Brad Ross (2 pointer) and Greg Downing to open up a 10-6 lead. Seibald, who accounted for four out of six Denver goals in the first half, closed the second quarter with a laser of a goal to bring the score to 10-7 Cannons at the half.

The Cannons opened the second half with consecutive goals by Michael McDonald and Smith. Denver’s Nate Watkins and Drew Westervelt returned the favor with two quick goals, only to have the Cannons fire back and reclaim the lead on goals by Kevin Buchanan and Smith to make the score 14-9. The quarter ended with a goal by the Outlaws’ Brendan Mundorf wrapping around the net and past the Cannons defense to bring Denver within four.

The final quarter of the contest opened up with Westervelt’s second goal of the game as the Cannons looked to hold on to the lead. Wellesley’s Mike Stone then scored his first professional goal in his rookie debut as he notched an unassisted score to give Boston the four point advantage. Two consecutive Denver goals brought the game to within two before Poskay capped the scoring with his 99th career goal to give the Cannons a 16-13 victory.

Cannons goalie Kip Turner made 14 saves on 26 shots. Former #1 pick Pat Heim added two goals in his Boston debut. Poskay, playing in his fifth season with the Cannons, was impressed with the team’s effort. “We have a really young team and the energy showed tonight, we found some good lanes and got off the ball well. The fresh legs really helped us close out the victory and create some nice opportunities.” Boston coach Bill Daye was happy with the victory, but stressed the team has a long way to go. “We played really well and had multiple guys share the ball and get into the action tonight, we have a lot of work to do but you’re always going to walk away from a victory with a smile.”

The Cannons will return to action when they take on the Chicago Machine at Harvard Stadium on Saturday, May 22 at 7:00 PM.
