MLL Weekly Award Winners

Offensive Player of the Week
Kyle Dixon, Chesapeake Bayhawks

Dixon, who was honored as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career, led the Bayhawks to a convincing 23-11 victory over the Ohio Machine on Saturday night. He scored four goals, including three two-point goals, with three assists in a record-setting performance. Dixon, who became the eighth player in MLL history with three two-point goals in a game, became MLL’s all-time leader with 36 career two-point goals, surpassing the previous record of 33 set by Roy Colsey.

Defensive Player of the Week
Jesse Schwartzman, Denver Outlaws

Named as the MLL’s Defensive Player of the Week for the sixth time in his career, Schwartzman allowed just five goals in 58 minutes as the Denver Outlaws improved to 2-0 with a 15-6 victory over Hamilton on Saturday night. Schwartzman, who made 12 saves in the victory, anchored a Denver defense that did not allow a goal in back-to-back quarters for the first time in the team’s seven-year history.

Last Week’s Game Recaps

@ BOSTON 20, CHARLOTTE 12: Attackman Matt Poskay scored five goals, including three in the first half, to lead the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons to their second straight win, a 20-12 victory over the expansion Charlotte Hounds at Harvard Stadium on Saturday night. The Cannons, who won their fifth straight regular season game dating back to last year, also received a seven-point performance from attackman Ryan Boyle, including a goal with six assists. The Hounds, who dropped their second straight game, were led by attackman Jovan Miller and midfielder Justin Smith, who each scored two goals with an assist.

@ CHESAPEAKE 23, OHIO 11: Led by a record-setting performance from midfielder Kyle Dixon, the Chesapeake Bayhawks (2-0) won their second straight game with a 23-11 victory over the Ohio Machine in front of a franchise-record 10,162 fans at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. While leading the Bayhawks to their first-ever win over the Machine, the former University of Virginia standout became MLL’s all-time leader with his 34th career two-point goal in the second quarter. He also became the eighth player in MLL history to score three two-point goals in a game. Dixon, who posted the 16th 10-point game in MLL history, finished just two points shy of the franchise record set by Mark Millon in 2003. Midfielder Jim Connolly led the Machine by scoring three goals while three other players added a pair of markers.

@ DENVER 15, HAMILTON 6: Led by five goals and an assist from midfielder Josh Sims, the Denver Outlaws improved to 2-0 this season with a 15-6 victory over the Hamilton Nationals at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, spoiling Hamilton’s season opener. Sims, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, scored all five of his goals during an 11-0 Denver run that spanned over 32 minutes.  While Sims led the Outlaws with a six-point effort, attackman Jeremy Sieverts contributed his second straight “hat trick” with three goals, including a two-point goal.

MLL News and Notes

DIXON DOES THE TWO STEP: Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Kyle Dixon set one Major League Lacrosse record and tied another mark in the team’s 23-11 victory over the Ohio Machine on Saturday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. In the second quarter, he set the MLL career record by scoring his 34th career two-point goal, surpassing the previous record of 33 set by former Philadelphia/Bridgeport Barrage midfielder Roy Colsey. In addition, he became the eighth player in MLL history with three two-point goals in the same game. Dixon now has 36 career two-point goals in six MLL seasons.

PERFECT 10: In addition to his record-setting performance, Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Kyle Dixon also recorded the 16th 10-point game in Major League Lacrosse history. It is the first time a player has tallied 10 or more points in a game since attackman Grant Catalino of Rochester had 10 points (9 goals, 1 assist) against Hamilton on June 24 of last year. With 10 points on Saturday night, Dixon was two points shy of the Bayhawks’ franchise record that was set by attackman Mark Millon on June 27, 2003 (8 goals, 4 assists).

THEY’RE BACK: Boston Cannons attackman Matt Poskay and Denver Outlaws midfielder Josh Sims both had impressive season debuts with five-goal efforts last week. Poskay, who led the Cannons with 30 goals last year, missed the season opener against Rochester on April 28 for personal reasons. Meanwhile, Sims saw his first action since the 2010 season on Saturday night and made an instant impact by scoring five goals with an assist as the Outlaws earned a 15-6 victory.

MISTER ASSISTER: Boston Cannons attackman Ryan Boyle played a major role in the team’s 20-12 victory over the Charlotte Hounds on Saturday night by scoring a goal with a season-high six assists. It marked the first time a player has recorded six assists in a game since Hamilton’s Joe Walters had six assists last year against Rochester on June 25. With his six assists against Charlotte on Saturday night, Boyle is now just four assists shy of matching the MLL career record of 211 assists that is held by Conor Gill. In his ninth year in the MLL, Boyle leads the MLL with 10 assists this season and has tallied 20 or more assists in seven of his first eight years.

SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE: For the first time in their brief MLL histories, the Ohio Machine and Charlotte Hounds will face each other this Saturday night at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. In addition, one of the two teams will record their first wins after Charlotte lost to Boston last week while Ohio dropped a 23-11 decision at Chesapeake.
