DENVER, Colo. - Midfielder Steven Brooks scored all three of his goals in the second half, including the eventual game-winning marker, to lead the Chesapeake Bayhawks to their fourth win in five games, an 18-16 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Denver Outlaws at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday night.
Brooks, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, scored twice during the fourth quarter as the Bayhawks overcame a one-point deficit to earn their second win in five all-time visits to Denver.
After attackman John Grant, Jr. gave Chesapeake a quick 1-0 lead just 60 seconds into the first quarter, the Outlaws responded by tallying five straight points, including a two-point goal by attackman Jeremy Sieverts, to take a 5-1 advantage with 6:16 left in the period.
Midfielder Kyle Dixon answered with a two-point goal for the Bayhawks to close the gap to 5-3, but the Outlaws answered by scoring three consecutive goals over the final five minutes of the quarter for an 8-3 edge.
But, the Bayhawks responded by opening the second quarter on a 6-1 run, which included two goals from Dixon, to tie the game at 9-9 with 8:46 left in the first half. The teams traded goals before rookie attackman Mark Matthews gave Denver an 11-10 lead at the intermission with his fourth goal of the first half.
After each team scored a pair of goals, Brooks tied the game at 13-13 when he scored off an assist by Dixon. But, the Outlaws reclaimed the advantage when attackman Jordan McBride converted a pass from Matthews with just eight seconds remaining.
Attackman Brendan Mundorf extended the Denver advantage to 15-13 with an unassisted goal just under four minutes into the fourth quarter. However, the Bayhawks answered with a two-point goal by Brooks along with a goal from midfielder John Orsen to take the lead back at 16-15.
McBride tied the game at 16-16 when he converted a pass from Matthews into an open goal after a timeout with 2:29 remaining before the Bayhawks earned the win with two late goals, including the eventual game-winner from Brooks with 1:58 to play.
Dixon led the Bayhawks to the victory with a seven-point effort, scoring three goals, including a pair of two-point goals, with two assists. Meanwhile, Brooks posted a five-point effort with three goals, including a two-point marker, and an assist.
Mundorf scored three goals with five assists in a losing effort for the Outlaws while McBride and Matthews each added four goals with two assists.
