MLL Weekly Award Winners

Offensive Player of the Week
Drew Westervelt, Chesapeake Bayhawks


In leading the Bayhawks to a 15-7 victory over Charlotte on Saturday, Westervelt tallied a season-high five points by scoring four goals with an assist. He scored three of his four goals in the first quarter as the Bayhawks jumped out to a commanding 7-1 advantage. The Bayhawks’ third-leading scorer with 17 points this season, Westervelt is tied for second on the team with 10 goals and has a team-high seven assists.   

Defensive Player of the Week
Brian Karalunas, Long Island Lizards

 
Karalunas played an integral role in the Lizards’ 13-10 win over the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons on Saturday night. In addition to helping hold the Cannons scoreless for the final 24 minutes of the game, the former Villanova University standout also held Boston attackman Ryan Boyle without a point for just the second time in his MLL career, snapping a streak of 61 straight games with a point. Karalunas has eight ground balls this year in five games.

Cascade Rookie of the Week
Chris Bocklet, Denver Outlaws


Making his professional debut, the former University of Virginia standout scored three goals and added two assists as the Outlaws notched a 16-8 victory over the Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium. He tallied four of his five points during a four-goal third quarter run, scoring three goals and assisting on the other marker. A fourth round selection in the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft, Bocklet was a three-time All-America selection at Virginia with 137 career goals, which ranks fifth in school history.

@ CHESAPEAKE 15, CHARLOTTE 7: Attackman Drew Westervelt scored all four of his goals in the first half and also contributed an assist as the Chesapeake Bayhawks moved into sole possession of first place in the MLL standings with a 15-7 victory over the Charlotte Hounds at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening. The Bayhawks, who won their third straight game, moved into the top spot in the MLL standings after Boston’s loss to Long Island. The Bayhawks sprinted out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. While Westervelt earned Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors for his season-high five-point effort, three other Chesapeake players each scored twice.     

@ HAMILTON 17, ROCHESTER 8: After becoming the last MLL team this season to earn a victory, the Hamilton Nationals used a strong second quarter performance to earn their second straight win, a 17-8 victory over the Rochester Rattlers at Ron Joyce Stadium. The Nationals, who improved to 2-3 this season, outscored the Rattlers by an 8-2 margin in the second quarter to build a 10-4 lead they did not relinquish. Midfielder Stephen Keogh scored three goals with three assists en route to being named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game. Meanwhile, midfielder David Earl contributed three goals with two assists. The Rattlers were led by midfielder Steven Boyle, who scored twice with an assist.     

DENVER 16, @ OHIO 8: Attackman Brendan Mundorf scored all three of his goals in the first half and contributed three assists as the Denver Outlaws used a strong first half effort to earn a 16-8 victory over the Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium. The Outlaws snapped a two-game losing streak while handing the Machine its second loss in a row. The Outlaws sprinted out to a very quick 6-0 lead and lead by 11-2 at the intermission. While Mundorf earned Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors for his six-point effort, attackman Chris Bocklet tallied the first “hat trick” of his career with three goals and two assists. Attackman Chazz Woodson led the Machine with two goals and two assists in a losing effort.   

LONG ISLAND 13, @ BOSTON 10: Led by goalkeeper Drew Adams, the Long Island Lizards overcame a three-point deficit in the second half and held the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons scoreless for the final 24 minutes en route to earning a hard-fought 13-10 victory over the Cannons in front of a record-setting crowd of 11,894 fans at Harvard Stadium. Adams, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, made 16 saves en route to leading the Lizards to the victory while midfielder Brian Langtry had a goal with two assists. Attackman Matt Poskay led the Cannons in the loss by scoring three goals while midfielders Brad Ross and Brian Farrell each scored a pair of goals.


MLL News and Notes

CHANGE OF ADDRESS: The Rochester Rattlers acquired midfielder Brad Ross from the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons in a trade on Tuesday in exchange for midfielder Martin Cahill. Ross scored a career-high 19 goals with six assists last year in helping the Cannons win their first MLL title; he has three goals in four games this year. Meanwhile, Cahill tallied 16 goals last year for the Rattlers, but has yet to score a goal in five games.  

SEEING STARS: The MLL announced the rosters for the 2012 MLL All-Star Game presented by Moe’s Southwest Grill, which will be held on June 30 at FAU Stadium. The game will feature a Young Guns vs. Old School format and will be televised live on ESPN2 HD at 7:30 p.m. The rosters for the game are available on the MLL website.    

DEUCES: Chesapeake Bayhawks attackman Ben Rubeor has tallied a point in 22 consecutive games after scoring one goal in the Bayhawks’ 15-7 win over the Charlotte Hounds on Saturday night. During his 22-game point streak, the former University of Virginia standout has scored 33 goals with 15 assists.  

GOOSE EGGS: Boston Cannons attackman Ryan Boyle was held without a point in Saturday’s 13-10 loss against the Long Island Lizards, snapping a streak of 61 consecutive games with at least one point. A ninth-year MLL veteran, Boyle was held without a point for just the second time in his career.

HOME RUN: For Charlotte Hounds midfielder Stephen Berger and Denver Outlaws midfielder Josh Sims, returning to their home fields this weekend could prove to be very productive. Berger has scored 10 of his team-high 14 goals at American Legion Memorial Stadium while Sims has tallied 10 of his 11 markers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
