HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Led by midfielder Greg Gurenlian, the Long Island Lizards overcame a two-goal half-time deficit to snap a two-game losing streak with a 14-11 Major League Lacrosse victory over the defending MLL champion Boston Cannons at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday night.
Gurenlian, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, won 19 of 28 face-offs and recorded 10 ground balls. He also contributed a goal in the victory.
Led by three goals from attackman Matt Poskay, the Cannons jumped out to a commanding 5-1 lead in the first quarter before Long Island answered by scoring three of the next four goals.
Trailing by 6-4 at the intermission, the Lizards scored two goals from midfielders Mike Unterstein and Will Mangan to tie the game with 10:32 remaining in the third quarter. After attackman Kevin Buchanan regained a one-goal lead for the Cannons, the Lizards put together a four-point run, including a two-point goal from attackman Max Seibald, to take a 10-7 lead with 4:34 left.
Attackman Ryan Boyle scored an unassisted goal with 3:12 remaining in the third quarter to trim the margin to 10-8.
Led by a goal and an assist from rookie attackman Tommy Palasek, the Lizards began the fourth quarter by scoring three consecutive goals to extend their advantage to 13-8.
The teams traded goals midway through the period before Poskay added a pair of goals off assists from Buchanan to narrow the gap to 15-11, but the Cannons were unable to get any closer.
While Gurenlian led the Lizards to the victory, midfielder Stephen Peyser scored three goals with an assist while Palasek contributed two goals with an assist.
Poskay scored a game-high five goals in a losing effort for the Cannons while Buchanan added two goals with two assists.
The Lizards outshot Boston by a 45-41 margin.
