BOSTON, Mass. – Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending July 22, 2012, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Denver Outlaws attackman Brendan Mundorf was named as the MLL Offensive Player of the Week while Chesapeake Bayhawks goalkeeper Kip Turner earned the MLL Defensive Player of the Week award.
Meanwhile, Long Island Lizards attackman Tommy Palasek was selected as the recipient of the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week.
In leading the Outlaws to a 17-13 victory over the Boston Cannons on Thursday night, Mundorf recorded his sixth “hat trick” of the season by scoring three goals in addition to contributing four assists. He tallied two goals with two assists in the first half as the Outlaws built an 8-5 lead.
The MLL’s second-leading scorer with 45 points, Mundorf is the Outlaws’ leading scorer with 24 goals and 21 assists. Mundorf, who earned his second Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season, has now been named as the Offensive Player of the Week seven times in his career, which ranks third in MLL history.
Turner, who earned his sixth career Defensive Player of the Week honor, led the Bayhawks to an 11-7 victory over the Ohio Machine on Saturday night. While helping Chesapeake secure a berth in the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior, Turner made 16 saves, including 12 saves in the second half, and allowed just five goals. In the third quarter, he made seven saves while not allowing a goal as the Bayhawks built an 8-4 lead.
The MLL leader with a 9.98 goals against average and a .557 save percentage, Turner has played in eight games for the league-leading Bayhawks, who have a 9-2 record.
Honored as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, Palasek scored a season-high six goals and added an assist as the Lizards moved into third place in the MLL standings with a 19-12 victory over the Hamilton Nationals on Saturday night. He scored four of his goals in the second half as the Lizards overcame an early two-goal deficit to earn the win.
Palasek, who has played in eight games this season, is tied for second on the team with 19 goals while his 23 points ranks fifth on the team.
The 2012 MLL season continues on Saturday with four games. The Bayhawks will travel to Boston on Saturday afternoon while Charlotte travels to Long Island. Meanwhile, Denver visits Hamilton and Rochester will host Ohio on Saturday night.
