BOSTON, Mass. - Led by two goals and six assists from attackman Ryan Boyle, the Boston Cannons used a strong start to the second half to earn a 16-13 Major League Lacrosse victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks in front of 9,117 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Boyle, who earned Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors, tallied three of his assists during the third quarter as the Cannons overcame a 9-8 deficit to earn the victory.
The Bayhawks took a quick 3-0 lead in the opening four minutes of the first quarter before the Cannons closed the margin to 3-2 with back-to-back goals from midfielder Pat Heim and attackman Matt Poskay.
The teams exchanged goals to end the first quarter, giving Chesapeake a 4-3 edge.
After attackman John Grant, Jr. extended the Bayhawks' advantage to 5-3 just over three minutes into the second quarter, the Cannons answered by scoring three of the next four goals to even the score at 6-6 on a Poskay marker with 5:37 left in the first half.
The teams traded goals for a second time before a pair of goals by Grant regained a two-point cushion for the Bayhawks with 1:37 left in the first half.
With 42 seconds remaining, Boyle scored off an assist from midfielder Mike Stone to narrow the Cannons' deficit to 9-8 at the intermission.
Led by two goals from attackman Ari Sussman, the Cannons opened the second half by scoring four unanswered goals to take a 12-9 lead with 5:49 remaining in the third quarter. The Bayhawks ended a nearly 16-minute scoring drought in the closing seconds of the period on a goal by attackman Ben Rubeor.
The Cannons upped their lead to 14-10 just over six minutes into the fourth quarter when midfielder Paul Rabil tallied a two-point goal off an assist from Boyle. Following a goal by Grant to narrow the gap to 14-11, the Cannons expanded their advantage to 16-11 with goals by Stone and Boyle.
Trailing by a five-point margin, the Bayhawks tried to mount a comeback when midfielder Matt Abbott scored back-to-back goals, including a shorthanded marker off a Grant assist with 1:27 remaining.
However, the Cannons held off the Bayhawks to earn the victory.
While Boyle led the Cannons with his season-high eight-point performance, Rabil added two goals, including a two-point marker, with two assists. Midfielder Chris Eck also contributed to the victory by winning 19 of 31 face-offs with 12 ground balls.
Grant led the Bayhawks with four goals and two assists in a losing effort while midfielder Michael Kimmel scored twice with two assists.
MLL will host its 2012 Championship Weekend presented by Warrior on August 25 and 26 at Harvard Stadium in Boston, Mass. It will be a battle of the top four teams and will include two semi-final games on Saturday followed by the championship game on Sunday. Tickets are available now via Ticketmaster.com.
