BEANTOWN BATTLE: After three years of being held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., the Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend has moved back to Boston, Mass. for the fourth time in the league’s 12-year history … It will also be the second time that MLL Championship Weekend has been held at Harvard Stadium … In 2008, the Rochester Rattlers won their only MLL title at Harvard … In 2004 and 2005, the MLL playoffs were held at Nickerson Field on the campus of Boston University.
O’ SAY CAN YOU SING?: Boston radio personality Kennedy Elsey will sing the National Anthem before the first semi-final game between Denver and Long Island on Saturday afternoon … It will be the second time she has performed at an MLL event … She also sang the National Anthem prior to the 2011 MLL All-Star Game … In addition, Janine Stange will sing the National Anthem prior to the MLL Championship Game on Sunday afternoon … Known as “National Anthem Girl,” she is the former Public Relations Director of the Long Island Lizards and has performed at numerous events to raise funds for the Armed Forces Foundation.
ROCK ON: Withersby, a New York City-based band, has been named as the official band of the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior … It will be the second time the band has performed at an MLL event … Withersby also performed at the 2011 MLL All-Star Game … The band will be performing live in the Fan Zone during the weekend.
FACING OFF FOR CHARITY: Long Island Lizards midfielder Greg Gurenlian will be raising money during Championship Weekend for Monster’s Kids, a charity that was started by former Lizards teammate Tim Goettelmann … Fans are encouraged to donate money for every face-off that Gurenlian wins during the Lizards’ semi-final game against Denver.
HOME SWEET HOME?: The Boston Cannons will try to become the second team in MLL history to win the league championship on its home field … In 2010, the Chesapeake Bayhawks won their third MLL championship on their home field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium … In addition, the Boston Cannons played for the 2004 MLL title on their home field at Nickerson Field.
BACK TO THE DANCE: For the 10th time in 12 years, the Boston Cannons qualified for MLL Championship Weekend by posting a 9-5 regular season record … The 10 playoff appearances are a league record … Meanwhile, the Chesapeake Bayhawks will be competing for the MLL title for the eighth time in their 11-year history … The Denver Outlaws are making their seventh play-off appearance this year.
WHAT A DEBUT: All four head coaches participating in the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend are in their first years at the helm … Boston Coach Steve Duffy was an assistant coach on last year’s Cannons staff that won the MLL title … Chesapeake Coach Dave Cottle was also an assistant coach for the Bayhawks last year.
LUCKY SEVEN?: The Denver Outlaws have set a Major League Lacrosse record by earning a postseason berth in seven consecutive years … The Boston Cannons set the league record by reaching the playoffs in each of their first six seasons … In addition, it marks the third time a team has qualified for the playoffs in five or more straight seasons.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: For the first time since 2009, the Denver Outlaws clinched the top seed for the MLL Championship Weekend … It also marks the third time in the franchise’s seven-year history that the Outlaws have won the MLL regular season title … However, the playoffs have not been too kind to the Cannons … In 10 previous postseason games, the Outlaws have a 3-7 record … Overall, the top seed has a 17-4 (.810) record in the play-offs and has advanced to the MLL Championship Game in 10 of the first 11 years … The only time when the top seed has not advanced past the semi-finals was in 2010 when the Boston Cannons lost to Chesapeake.
BACK-TO-BACK: In addition, the Boston Cannons will attempt to become the second team in Major League Lacrosse history to win back-to-back championships … In 2006 and 2007, the Philadelphia Barrage won the MLL title.
IT ONLY TAKES ONE: The Long Island Lizards will attempt to become the second team in MLL history to win the league title as the fourth seed … The Chesapeake Bayhawks became the first team to win the MLL title as the fourth seed when they upset Boston and Long Island en route to their third MLL title in 2010 … Prior to that, the fourth seed had never won a postseason game in MLL Championship Weekend.
SO WE MEET AGAIN: The Boston Cannons and the Chesapeake Bayhawks will be meeting in the semi-finals for the third straight year … It will also be the fourth time the teams have played against each other in the postseason … Boston has won two of the three previous playoff meetings.
CONNECT FOUR: The Chesapeake Bayhawks will attempt to become the first team in MLL history to win four league crowns when they compete this weekend … Chesapeake has won league titles in 2002, 2005 and 2010 … The only other team to win three MLL championships is the Philadelphia Barrage, which claimed the trophy in 2004, 2006 and 2007.
ON THE OFFENSIVE: For the fourth straight year, the Boston Cannons had a player named as the Warrior Offensive Player of the Year after midfielder Paul Rabil earned the award in 2012 … Rabil also won the award in 2009 and 2011 while attackman Matt Poskay earned the honor in 2010 … In addition, Rabil become the second player in MLL history to win the award three times, joining current Chesapeake attackman John Grant, Jr. …Grant won the award as a member of the Rochester Rattlers in 2001, 2007 and 2008.
GOAL ORIENTED: For the third straight season, Boston Cannons attackman Matt Poskay led the MLL in goals … In 13 games this year, the former University of Virginia attackman tallied 38 goals, including a season-high five goals three times … Since the start of the 2010 season, Poskay has tallied 113 goals … He was honored as the 2010 Warrior Offensive Player of the Year and Bud Light MLL Season MVP after scoring a league-high 45 goals and also had 30 goals last season.
POINT TAKEN: Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil set the MLL single-season record by tallying 72 points in 14 games this year, including a pair of eight-point efforts against Rochester (Apr. 28) and Denver (May 19) … Rabil, who is the league’s leading scorer for the second year in a row, broke the record of 71 points that was set by Rochester Rattlers attackman John Grant, Jr. in 2007 … In 56 career games, Rabil has tallied 246 points, including 133 goals.
DEUCES: Led by midfielder Kyle Dixon, the Chesapeake Bayhawks set an MLL record by scoring 28 two-point goals in 14 games this season … The Bayhawks, who led the MLL in two-point goals for the third time in the last four years, scored 16 of their 28 two-point goals at home this season, including a season-high four two-point markers in a May 5 win against the Ohio Machine.
TWO STEP: Chesapeake Bayhawks midfielder Kyle Dixon set the Major League Lacrosse single-season and career two-point goal records this season … Named to the All-MLL Team, the former University of Virginia standout scored 15 two-point goals while leading the Bayhawks to a 10-4 record … Dixon scored 10 of his 15 two-point goals at home this year … In addition, he became MLL’s all-time leader in two-point goals, finishing the season with 47 two-point markers in his seven-year career.
BICENTENNIAL: For just the second time in MLL history, two teams tallied 200 or more goals during the season … Denver set a team record by scoring a team-record 216 goals in 14 games … Meanwhile, the Cannons had 207 goals in 14 games, the second-highest total in franchise history … In 2004, three teams tallied at least 200 goals … Boston scored 215 goals while Rochester had 206 goals … Philadelphia, which won its first MLL title that year, tallied 203 goals.
FACE IT: For the first time in MLL history, three different players won 200 or more face-off attempts this year … Long Island Lizards midfielder Greg Gurenlian tallied a league-high 230 face-off wins, the second-highest total in team history … Meanwhile, Boston face-off specialist Chris Eck had 223 wins while Hamilton’s Matt Dolente won 219 face-off wins … In 2008, Rochester’s Alex Smith (249) and Long Island’s Peter Vlahakis (244) each tallied over 200 face-off wins, marking the only other time in MLL history that more than one face-off specialist has won 200+ face-offs in the same season.
INSTANT IMPACT: Rookie attackmen Matt Gibson and Tommy Palasek played a major role in helping the Long Island Lizards reach the MLL playoffs for the third time in the last four years … Gibson, who was named as the Cascade Rookie of the Year, was the Lizards’ third-leading scorer with 33 points after he scored 18 goals with 15 assists in 12 games … Meanwhile, Palasek led all MLL rookies this year with 21 goals and also contributed five assists while seeing action in 11 games.
MLL will host its 2012 Championship Weekend presented by Warrior on August 25 and 26 at Harvard Stadium in Boston, Mass.
