Major League Lacrosse Announces Weekly Award Winners for Week 8
Zach Greer, Matt Bocklet and Andrew Hennessey Honored
Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, has announced its weekly award winners following this past weekend's action. Long Island Lizards attackman Zach Greer was named the Offensive Player of the Week, Denver Outlaws defenseman Matt Bocklet was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Outlaws face-off specialist Andrew Hennessey was named the Rookie of the Week.
Greer posted 5 goals including the game-winner in overtime in the Lizards 13-12 win over the Chicago Machine on July 3rd. The 3rd overall pick in the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft scored all 5 of his goals in the 2nd half including 3 in the 4th quarter and then the game-winner, as the Lizards came from behind to earn their third win of the season. Greer now has 11 goals in the past two games, boosting his total to a team-leading 17 on the season.
Bocklet was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for his play in a 12-10 Outlaws win over Chesapeake on the 4th of July. The win moved the Outlaws to 5-3 and into a first place tie in the Major League Lacrosse standings. In addition to his work on the defensive end in helping to hold the high-scoring Bayhawks to just 10 points, Bocklet got into the act on the offensive end as well scoring 3 goals. Bocklet opened the scoring with a goal just 53 seconds into the game and added another before the first quarter was over. Bocklet opened the second half scoring as well with a goal just 12 seconds into the 3rd quarter, breaking a 6-6 halftime tie.
“With Matt [Bocklet] scoring three goals; it’s pretty huge for a long-stick defender to do that,” Outlaws Head Coach Brian Reese said. “He scored some huge goals and got the momentum going.”
Outlaws rookie face-off specialist Andrew Hennessey earns Rookie of the Week honors by winning 54% of his face-offs in the win over Chesapeake. The 11th overall pick in this years’ MLL Draft, the rookie out of Bryant University was making just his second appearance of the season. The 54% total is made even more impressive by the fact that he was going head-to-head with the Bayhawks’ Alex Smith, widely considered the best face-off specialist in Major League Lacrosse.
