DELAWARE, Ohio - Goalkeeper
Kip Turner made 16 saves, including 12 in the second half, as the Chesapeake Bayhawks became the first team to secure a berth in the 2012 MLL Championship Weekend presented by Warrior after earning an 11-7 victory over the Ohio Machine at Selby Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Bayhawks, who improved to 9-2 on the season, earned their third consecutive postseason berth with the victory.
Drew Westervelt gave the Bayhawks an early 1-0 lead with 12:57 left in the first quarter, the Machine answered with back-to-back goals from attackmen
Jim Connolly and
Joe Cummings to take a 2-1 advantage.
But, the Bayhawks countered by scoring consecutive goals from midfielders
Steven Brooks and
Ben Hunt to regain a one-goal lead with 5:49 left in the first half. The teams exchanged goals before Ohio tied the game at 4-4 with a goal by defenseman
Greg Bice with 20 seconds remaining before the intermission.
However, the Bayhawks came out in the second half and held Ohio scoreless for over 26 minutes while building a 9-4 advantage. Midfielder
Michael Kimmel scored a goal with an assist during the run.
With 3:32 remaining in the fourth quarter, Cummings snapped the Machine's scoring drought by converting a pass from attackman
Chazz Woodson to trim the deficit to 9-5.
Kyle Dixon secured the victory with 2:24 left when he scored his 12th two-point goal of the season to set the MLL single-season record and extend the Bayhawks' advantage to 11-5.
Connor Martin converted a two-point goal with 1:55 remaining, but the Machine was unable to get any closer.
While Turner led the Bayhawks to the victory en route to
Bud Light MLL Player of the Game honors, Dixon contributed a four-point effort with a two-point goal and two assists. Meanwhile, Rubeor had two goals, including a two-point marker.
Cummings tallied three goals in a losing effort for the Machine for the first "hat trick" of his MLL career.
