Max Seibald: New Face of the Lizards

March 17, 2016
Shock waves rippled through the Liberty Ballroom of the Philadelphia Marriott during the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft on January 13, 2012. Just moments before the draft, Commissioner David Gross announced a major draft day trade that sent MLL All-Star Max Seibald to the Long Island Lizards after being the face of the Denver Outlaws for three years. In exchange for Seibald, the Outlaws received the fourth overall selection in this year's Collegiate Draft (Mark Matthews, University of Denver), a fourth round pick in the 2013 MLL Collegiate Draft and midfielder  Christian Pastirik.

A three-year MLL veteran, Seibald has scored 41 goals, including seven two-point markers, with 11 assists in 28 games for the Outlaws. He played in 10 games last season, scoring nine goals, including a pair of two-point tallies, with an assist. In 2010, Seibald enjoyed his best season with the Outlaws by scoring 20 goals (2 two-point goals) with eight assists. With 30 points, the former Cornell University standout ranked third on the team.

This season, Seibald will suit up for his hometown team and is excited to be a part of the Lizards organization. “It’s an opportunity for me to come back home and play in my backyard. I’ve had an awesome experience in Denver for the past three seasons. They’re a first class organization with a great venue and amazing fans, but I’m excited for the opportunity to play with guys like Stephen Peyser, Drew Adams and potentially Rob Pannell. It’s an exciting move for me; it’s something new and something to motivate me to work harder,” Seibald said.

Hard work is something that Seibald thrives off of. The Cornell alum and 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy winner knows that a combination of hard work and luck will take the Lizards all the way this season. According to him, the team will capitalize on their undeniable mix of veteran leadership, young talent and locker room camaraderie.

“You all have to buy into one system and compete for one another, not for yourself. You have to show up and play hard because in this league, there’s so much talent that any team could beat another on any given night.” Seibald says there will be ups and downs for the Lizards, but the ultimate goal is to get to the playoffs and to start fresh.

Though he sets his goals with a collective effort in mind, it’s impossible to forget about last season’s personal knee injury which affected his performance. “I don’t think I was 100% at all last season,” he admits. “I came back a little early and didn’t have the opportunity to completely strengthen my knee. But I have been hitting the gym hard with my trainer and am stronger in my legs now than I think I’ve ever been and I’m itching to get back and play the game I love and grew up playing.”
