Two-Time MLL Champion Joe Walters Renews Contract
BOSTON, Mass. (Monday, February 13, 2012) – Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday that Hamilton Nationals Attackman Joe Walters has renewed his contract for the 2012 MLL season. Walters is a two-time MLL Champion who won the Steinfeld Trophy with both the Rochester Rattlers in 2008 and the Hamilton Nationals in 2009.
Walters, the No. 1 overall selection by the Rochester Rattlers in the 2006 MLL Collegiate Draft, is entering his third season with the Nationals, his sixth season with the league. In 2011 he played in all 12 regular season games and tallied 39 points (18 goals and 20 assists), finishing fifth in the league in scoring. He also played in both playoff games and scored two goals before falling short to the Boston Cannons in the Championship Game.
The University of Maryland alumnus scored 189 points in 57 career games with Major League Lacrosse. Of his 114 goals, six were two-pointers, and he tallied 69 assists. He is a two-time MLL Champion and in 2008 was named the Playoff MVP after leading the Rattlers to their first victory. In 2009, he assisted on the game-winning goal for the Hamilton Nationals against the Denver Outlaws.
Walters is a four-time MLL All-Star and was named to the Great Atlantic All-MLL Team last season, which is voted upon by coaches, general managers and fans. He was a four-time All-American and is the all-time leading point and goal scorer in the history of University of Maryland lacrosse with 227 and 153 respectively.
