In a follow-up to last month’s Duel in Denver, the evaluation process for the 2014 FIL World Championship Games continues this Sunday, October 7 th, with the first annual Capital Lacrosse Invitational. Fifty-two players have been selected to faceoff in a 3pm scrimmage at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, with all but five of those players hailing from the eight MLL teams.
Led by Team USA Head Coach Richie Meade, competitors from the Rochester Rattlers, Boston Cannons, Long Island Lizards, Denver Outlaws, and Hamilton Nationals will be taking the field, along with members of the 2012 Expansion Teams, the Ohio Machine and Charlotte Hounds, and the 2012 MLL Champion Chesapeake Bayhawks.
MLL fans can look for big names such as Ryan Boyle, Chazz Woodson, Matt Striebel, and Jesse Schwartzman, as well as newcomers Stephen Robarge, Steele Stanwick, and Steven Brooks, just to name a few.
The event, presented by the Mario St. George Boiardi Foundation, not only seeks to serve as an evaluator for the 2014 World Championship Team, but to carry on the late Boiardi’s mission of empowering the younger generation through academics and athletics. Mario St. George Boiardi, Landon School alum, was a Cornell Lacrosse star, loyal friend, and selfless leader who gave his life in 2004 while playing the game he loved. In keeping with the Foundation’s mission, Sunday’s events will also feature scrimmages between Cornell and North Carolina, John Hopkins and Penn State, as well as coaches’ clinics and chalk talks. Additionally, MLL’s own Max Seibald will be co-heading an interactive youth clinic alongside several collegiate athletes.
Although the process is a long one, Sunday’s Invitational should prove to be a major step toward the finalization of the 2014 World Team, all the while bringing attention and support to a great cause.
