The Boston Cannons beat the Chesapeake Bayhawks 15-14 earning their first win of the season in a nail biting back and forth match on Saturday night at Harvard Stadium. The Cannons earned their first win of the season in overtime with Player of the Game Ryan Boyle scoring the gamewinner and snapping the Bayhawks’ winning streak along the way.
The battle started in the first quarter with Bayhawks’ Drew Westervelt scoring less than two minutes in. Matt Abbott and Ben Rubeor also scored for Chesapeake, but the Boston’s versatile offense was also warming up for the first time all season. The Cannons came out on top 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was even tighter than the first. Matt Abbott and John Grant Jr. scored back-to-back, earning the Bayhawks a 5-4 lead. Boston answered Chesapeake’s challenge with Boyle (2), Kevin Buchanan Mike Stone all scoring to put the Cannons up 8-7 at the half.
The game began to heat up offensively in the second half. After not scoring at all in the first, Paul Rabil found his rhythm, tallying a goal and a 2-pointer, with Stone contributing both assists. The Cannons were on point defensively as well, with goalie Mike Gabel posting seven of his 17 saves in the third quarter. Chesapeake responded in kind recording five goals, including a Steven Brooks 2-pointer to close the quarter level 12.
With the game tied, both teams battled for control of the ball. The Bayhawks took the lead with two goals by Grant Jr., while Rabil secured overtime play with a little over a minute left in regulation.
The Cannons closed out the game in thrilling fashion in front of a cheering crowd of 11, 156, with the shot clock down to one second, Boyle drove and sank a diving shot, earning the Cannons their first hard-earned win of the season, and ending the Bayhawks undefeated record.
Both teams will have Memorial Day weekend off before returning to MLL action. The Cannons travel to Denver, Colo., to play the Outlaws on Friday, May 31 at 9:30 PM (ET), while The Bayhawks faceoff against the Hamilton Nationals on Saturday, June 1, in Annapolis, Md.
