Editor's Note: As we asked MLL players to tell us about their plans for Thanksgiving and what they're most thankful for, New York Lizards' attackman Rob Pannell took it one step further and gave us a glimpse into a Cornell Lacrosse time-honored tradition that carries on even after graduation.
On Tuesday morning Cornell Lacrosse Alumni of NYC gathered at 5:00 AM in Columbus Circle to participate in the Turkey Trot. It is tradition every year that the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break at school, the Cornell Lacrosse team has its annual Turkey Trot (an early morning run) and then plays a game of football after. It’s a way of ending the fall on a high note with a productive yet fun event with your brothers on the team. Upon graduation of the first ever class to participate in the turkey trot; Cornell Lacrosse Alumni all over the country have started their own turkey trots, waking up early with the team that same morning.
This was my first year running the Turkey Trot as part of the alumni group in NYC and after leaving I have never been more grateful and thankful to be a part of the Cornell Lacrosse family. Watching how excited everyone got when one person after the next showed up in Columbus Circle was amazing and just the look of pure joy on everyone’s face, from start to finish. In the words of legendary coach Richie Moran and as Coach DeLuca so often repeated, I was thinking man, “Its great to be here.” And then came the emails from alumni all over the country with pictures of them participating in their Turkey Trots. Although I was not surprised, because that’s how our coaches have trained us on the importance of commitment, tradition, and family, I was amazed! It is not the wins and losses that you remember but mornings like these. It felt just like a morning back at school, waking up early, walking into the locker room and although it might be early and you may be tired…you can’t help but look around at your brothers and smile!
