The Fourth was with the Denver Outlaws, as they kept their win streak going with an exciting 14-12 victory over the Ohio Machine on Star Wars night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
Denver controlled the tempo in the early going, outscoring Ohio 3-0 in the first quarter. Eric Law started the scoring for the Outlaws before Chris Bocklet joined in a minute and a half later. Law scored his second of the game late in the quarter after receiving a pass from John Grant, giving Junior his first point as a Denver Outlaw. Schwartzman made four saves to shut down Ohio’s offense.
Bocklet added one more in the second, but that’s when Ohio started to push back. The Machine got their first of the game on a rip by Marcus Holman with 6:21 left in the second quarter, before Kevin Cooper scored two right before halftime as the Outlaws led 5-3. Scott Rodgers stood tall for Ohio, keeping them in the game with six saves in the second frame.
It was all Ohio in the third, as they outscored the Outlaws 6-1 immediately after halftime. Six different players found the back of the net for the Machine, including Cooper who completed his hat trick and Holman who scored an absolute beauty while falling to tie the game at seven. The only goal for Denver was a 2-pointer off the stick of Jeremy Sieverts and the Outlaws trailed going into the fourth, 9-7.
The Machine scored twice more to open the fourth with Kyle Harrison and Holman helping Ohio complete a 9-1 run. Denver didn’t go quietly, however, as Law, Sieverts and Justin Pennington all found the back of the net to get the Outlaws within one. Then it was John Grant Jr. capping off the run with an incredible behind-the-back effort to tie the game at 11.
The two teams traded goals midway through the fourth with Sieverts and Harrison hitting the target and the teams remained deadlocked at 12. With just over two minutes remaining, it was Sieverts converting his fourth of the game to give the Outlaws a narrow lead. Ohio had a chance to tie the game late, but Lee Zink made a spectacular defensive play to seal the victory for Denver.
Schwartzman made seven saves in the game (just one in the final 30 minutes), while Rodgers stopped 12 of 25 shots himself. Both teams went 1-for-3 on the power play and Ohio won the face off battle going 15-for-29 at the X.
Four different players had five-point games, with Holman, Law, Sieverts and Steele Stanwick all hitting the mark. Sieverts had a game-high four goals while Stanwick led all players with four assists. Law’s five points earned him Coca-Cola player of the game.
