BOSTON, Mass. - Goalkeeper Drew Adams made 16 saves and led a strong defensive effort as the Long Island Lizards used a late run to defeat the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Boston Cannons in front of a record-setting crowd of 11,894 fans at Harvard Stadium on Saturday night.
Led by Adams, who was named as the Bud Light MLL Player of the Game, the Lizards held the MLL's top offense scoreless for the final 21 minutes en route to the victory.
After the Cannons took a 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals from midfielder Brian Farrell and attackman Matt Poskay, the Lizards used a three-goal run to claim a 3-2 advantage with 2:57 left in the opening period. Midfielder Brian Langtry scored a goal with an assist during the run.
The teams traded goals twice before the Cannons scored four consecutive goals to take an 8-6 lead with 3:01 remaining in the first half. Midfielder Brad Ross scored twice during the run. Defenseman Albert Maione scored off a feed from Langtry with two seconds left in the first half, trimming the margin to 8-7.
Midfielders Mike Stone and Paul Rabil upped the Cannons' advantage to 10-7 by scoring consecutive goals with nine minutes left in the third quarter. But, the Cannons were held scoreless after that point.
Led by two goals and an assist from rookie attackman Matt Gibson, the Lizards scored six straight points to take a 13-10 lead they did not relinquish.
While Adams led the Lizard defense, Langtry scored a goal with two assists for Long Island, which was limited to just 34 shots. Meanwhile, attackman Max Seibald scored two goals, including a two-point marker in the second quarter.
Poskay scored three goals to lead the Cannons in a losing effort while Ross and Farrell each contributed two goals.
